Brooklyn Terry from Elite Force Crew gives his view on the fundamentals of dance and its connection to the music

Something that came up in discussion between a few of us dancers recently was how and why people started taking classes at studios. It seems as though Sydney’s hip hop/jazz dance scene (I say that to include those dancing jazz and calling it hip hop) has a majority of people that dance for various reasons other than because they love the music, first and foremost. Which isn’t a bad thing; people should be dancing, and having fun and getting whatever it is they need to get from dancing.

I started out dancing because I really loved the music, whether it was hip hop, r&b, funk, disco and soul and so on. This is something Terry discusses in the video below, about how the music came first, and dance followed, and not just in a studio. When I see dancers at a club, mocking or rolling their eyes at a ‘non-dancer’ who doesn’t have the technique but just moves to the music and really feels it, I get kinda pissed off. These ‘non-dancers’ probably have more feeling in their dancing than those who are just stuck with learning moves and techniques are, and THAT is really what dancing is about. So please give them the same level of respect as you expect from others when you dance.

Now check out the wise words from Mr Brooklyn Terry:
