BET Cypher 2020 H.E.R, Erykah, Teyana, Brandy

The BET Cypher 2020 as part of the BET Hip Hop Awards always put on a good show with multitudes of feel-good, throwback vibes. It’s so good to see females being represented more frequently in hip hop for their musical talents and nothing else, so props to the people behind the BET Hip Hop Awards. Last year had Nicki Minaj, Remy Ma and Queen Latifah’s return to the stage. It’s a great sign of the times.

First up in the video, Teyana Taylor, to be honest I’m not too familiar with but hey, power to her. Love Ms Taylor’s outfit, the black fitted with chunky gold jewellery. *note to self: search everything about Teyana Taylor*

As a 90s kid, this BET Hip Hop Awards cypher was a great throwback with a modern twist featuring absolute queens of R&B, soul and hip hop to Brandy’s classic hit I Wanna Be Down. It’s such a jam. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Brandy spitting bars but of course, it suits her and was a great surprise at the end of this cypher. I think it’s also the first time I’ve ever seen her in blonde braids instead of her signature natural black tresses.

H.E.R is my obsession and her look here reminds me so much of Aaliyah (RIP my childhood idol). “Filipina queen, my money green like vegetable…” YES YES YES! She is a soulful songstress and her vocals are next level. Her performance was the highlight of the night and should definitely be on your playlist if you’re in search of powerful music. The hair (she got and Ms Taylor got the same memo) and fit are a bit more reminiscent of TLC though, with the baggy metallic black tracksuit.

Erykah Badu the veteran, always flawless. She has that mystical magic woman aura about her, having been in the industry longer than the other ladies. Fresh with her Badu-flow, it’s great to see her in this line up of soul queens.

The ladies traded bars back and forth with a lot of energy while also displaying their lyrical prowess. This is a hit – do they release these as singles? Gotta do a search, dang!
